The Construction Site

Can you believe these mischievous Gila Woodpeckers flew in with their hard hats and tools and proceeded to peck my nice framed print of saguaro and fishhook barrel cacti!

Gila Woodpeckers love the saguaro cacti of the Sonoran Desert. They build their nest in the cavities, and the tall saguaros provide food and shelter among the vicious spines.

The fishhook barrel cacti grow in the Sonoran Desert too. If left undisturbed, they always point south. Many travelers, a long time ago, used this navigational tool when lost in the Sonoran Desert.

Lunch At The Cactus Buffet

Sometimes kids just wanna have fun. A javelina mom and reds (kids) will eat anything including prickly pear pads full of spines. Javelinas are peccaries that resemble a pig. They are found in North and South  America. They are cute but kinda ugly!
